Humble Beginning

1988-Till Now
Late. Doctor Tryambkeshwar Dhar Dwivedi, an emeritus professor of Mathematics & Statistics at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and his son Doctor Shivendera Dhar Dwaivedi were the visionary founder of the Freedom from Poverty Foundation. Established in 1988, the Foundation was born from his deep commitment to addressing the educational and healthcare needs of underserved communities. His leadership and foresight have guided the Foundation’s efforts to bring about meaningful change, starting with the support of schools like Devi Sringar Mati Inter College in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh.
The college, offering education from grades KG to Intermediate, stands as a testament to his vision, providing basic facilities like functional toilets and a hand pump for drinking water. Though lacking modern resources such as computers, the Foundation’s focus on improving education continues to grow, with ongoing projects aimed at enhancing local healthcare systems.
Alongside education, the Foundation’s efforts in healthcare have been transformative. Mobile clinics have treated over 60,000 patients, and partnerships with organizations like the Eye Foundation of America have facilitated vital surgeries, including cataract operations. Through his dedication, Dr. Dwivedi's legacy continues to break the cycle of poverty and improve lives by addressing both educational and medical needs.
Sadly in 2008, Professor T.D. Dwivedi, the Foundation’s founder passed away. At this time, his son, Dr. S.D. Dwivedi decided to continue his father’s impressive project of “breaking the cycle of poverty” of the most disadvantaged. As Dr. S.D. Dwivedi had immigrated to Canada, there was no longer a physical presence in the village of Barhiya to continue the Foundation’s work. In 2009, a partnership between the Freedom from Poverty Foundation and the Comprehensive Rural Health Project was created. The Foundation then expanded its activities to Jamkhed, a disadvantaged community in the state of Maharashtra, India.
Our Vision

The Freedom from Poverty Foundation envisions a future where its impact stretches across India, evolving from its foundation in acute surgical camps to addressing the pressing challenges of malnutrition and mental health. By expanding nationwide, the Foundation aims to create a holistic healthcare model, tackling both urgent surgical needs and long-term wellness through strategic partnerships with organizations like the Comprehensive Rural Health Project and the Freedom from Poverty Foundation Trust. Together, we seek to build a healthier, more resilient India, where every community has access to transformative care and support.
Our Values
DIGNITY
We are committed to having these families gain respect and develop a sense of pride and success.
PASSION
We strongly believe in respect for human rights and work with dedication and openness.
INDEPENDENCE
We strive to ensure that these underprivileged people develop total independence.
EQUALITY
Let us ensure that these people are treated equally, regardless of their gender, age, religion or social status.
Our Partnerships
Since 2009, the Freedom From Poverty Foundation has been working in partnership with the CHRP (Comprehensive Rural Health Project) in Jamkhed, a foundation that has been helping the most disadvantaged for over 45 years. This partnership ensures a permanent physical presence in the community of Jamkhed for the continuity of care and easier follow-up for the community. Both organisations share the mission of breaking the cycle of poverty by providing access to health care and fostering independence.

Since 2019, the Freedom From Poverty Trust has been making a meaningful impact in Lucknow through initiatives such as COVID-19 kit distribution, Food Distribution, and Blanket Drives for the underprivileged. This ongoing commitment ensures a steadfast presence in the community, addressing immediate needs while fostering resilience. With a vision to expand its efforts toward mental health awareness and support, the organization remains dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by providing essential resources and promoting overall well-being.
